In its own right, Grime has flourished in the U.K. for decades but is nationally noted as an “under-the-radar” genre. With artists like Skepta, Wiley, Stormzy at the forefront, Grime has pushed beyond U.K. borders and continues to expand. Spotify has officially recognized the genre as it’s own category. Over the years, we’ve seen the streaming service add grime artists to Hip-Hop, Afrobeat, and a remote Grime playlist without entirely giving Grime a defining class of its own.
Spotify’s senior editor Austin Darbo, who curates the popular U.K. playlist Who We Be, announced the new addition on Twitter on Tuesday (Jan 2). Darbo also mentioned that he “spoke to some grime legends about the imagery we used around the genre. Overall they felt the council block/pirate radio origins was a good way to represent it — and it will evolve.”
The new category features playlists such as Grime Shutdown, Grime Classics, and Grime Instrumentals.
