Kamau Kenyatte’s ZOMBIE EP is a picturesque moment in music that leaves the playground of your imagination to do most of the work. In its first seconds, the project introduces itself with a slow-tempo revision of Vance Joy’s “Riptide”. We’re then lightly pushed into this confusing bliss of a transition between serenity and trap.

Two questions arise; How can an intro less than two minutes do so much and what mode is this New York-based Hip-Hop artist about to take on throughout the rest of this project?

We spoke with Kamau as he gave CULTUREDUP a perspective that only the artist can. The notion of a “melting pot” is so imminent within the ZOMBIE EP. Kamau places each track to maneuver between heartfelt songs including “202”  and straight bangers like “Current Situation” and “Extendo” featuring Moon. We urge everyone reading today to play this 8-track project from start to finish.

Stepping away from the traditional genre titles like “Hip-hop” or “Rap”, how would you describe your music?

I WOULD DESCRIBE MY MUSIC AS A MELTING POT OF GENRES. I HAVE SO MANY INFLUENCES FROM RAP, ROCK, TO R&B. I JUST TRY TO EXPRESS THE FULL EMBODIMENT OF THE HUMAN EXPERIENCE WHICH CAN’T BE DESCRIBED IN ONE WORD. IT’S JUST “CULTURE MUSIC”.

What were some of your main influences during the making of “ZOMBIE”?

WELL, MY REAL LIFE FOR ONE AND ALSO THE BEAUTIFUL PEOPLE THAT I ENCOUNTER ON AN EVERYDAY BASIS. I AM AN OBSERVER. I LISTEN AND WATCH SOME OF THE THINGS I ENCOUNTER ARE BEAUTIFUL AND SOME SCARY WHILE SOME ARE SO FUNNY.

MY LIST OF ARTISTS WHO INFLUENCE ME ARE ENDLESS FROM THE MOST POPULAR LIKE KENDRICK TO THE UNKNOWN. EVERYONE HAS A STORY TO TELL AND I RESPECT AND LISTEN TO IT ALL.

Of course, every track on the EP must have some meaning to you, but what track(s) would you say sticks with you the most and why?

WELL WITH VERY LITTLE THOUGHT THAT WOULD BE “CURRENT SITUATION”.

I REFLECT THE MOST ON WHAT I WAS REALLY FEELING AT THE TIME…DESPONDENT AND DISCONNECTED FROM MY PAST WHILE STILL NOT FEELING FULLY EXCEPTED BY THE PRESENT. EVEN THOUGH THESE THINGS HUNT ME I STILL AM SO FOCUS ON MY GOALS AND BEING SO FAITHFUL TO THE BELIEF THAT THIS FEELING WILL PASS…HENCE THE HOOK.

“IT’S JUST MY CURRENT SITUATION NOT MY FINAL DESTINATION. IT’S JUST MY CURRENT SITUATION IM IN A NEW VIBRATION”

GET MONEY DONT WASTE TIME.

What message do you hope to convey to old fans and new listeners with this project?

NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS LOVE IS ALWAYS AND WILL FOREVER BE FIRST. THAT EVERYTHING WE GO THROUGH IS NOTHING NEW.
